ULTRAVIOLET LIGHT AND ITS USE IN MULTIPLE APPLICATIONS

Ultraviolet Light

Ultraviolet (UV) light is radiation that lies in the ultraviolet range and possesses wavelengths that are shorter than visible light but longer than x-rays. The sun is the largest source of UV light, and while prolonged exposure to UV can be harmful, it can also be very effective in applications for a wide variety of industries, including healthcare, government investigation, mineralogy, and water treatment.

Ultraviolet Light in Healthcare

UV light can be used for a variety of purposes in the healthcare industry. It can be used to detect ringworm, to induce the production of Vitamin D, to stimulate the immune system, and to treat skin disorders.

Additionally, UV light can detect cataracts in the eyes, as well as abrasions or lesions. Further studies and tests are continually providing new uses for ultraviolet light in medical applications.

Ultraviolet Light as a Germicide

Used at a particular wavelength of 253.7nm, UV light is effective at killing germs, bacteria, fungi, mold and a variety of spores and bacteria that cause allergies or transmit infections. UV light has been used as a germicide in clinics, hospitals and labs for over 60 years, and is now being utilized to treat and clean HVAC systems. It is also used for the purpose of water purification. It is not harmful to the water, does not alter its taste or introduce any chemicals, and does not cause harm to septic systems or plumbing.

Ultraviolet Light in Government and Criminal Applications Many substances have the tendency to fluoresce (glow brightly apart from other items and substances) when UV light is introduced. UV light can be used to detect various bodily fluids for the purposes of criminal investigation, as well as some types of accelerants, useful in arson investigations.

Ultraviolet Light for Rodent Detection

There are more common applications for UV light utilized by various trades, such as detecting rodent infestation. UV light can be used to detect rodent urine (which also glows differently than pet urine, and so can be easily discernable from any bodily fluid stains left by pets). The UV light can detect the presence of rodent hair as well.

UV LED flashlights are quickly becoming a common household object as well as a useful tool for many additional applications, such as checking stamps at nightclubs, detecting counterfeit items, and detecting leaks and cracks.

Natural Gas Detectors for the Home

With so many appliances and household items utilizing natural gas as a fuel, there is always the possibility of a gas leak could result in eventual asphyxiation if left unchecked, or the possibility an explosion could be ignited by the simple act of just flicking a light a switch.

Stoves and cooktops, furnaces and water heaters, gas fireplaces and many other household items and appliances that use natural gas all have the potential to malfunction. Unfortunately, while smoke detectors are commonplace in the home, natural gas detectors are not, though they definitely should be.

Natural gases are typically odorless, and while a low level of escaped gas might not be especially harmful, if the gas leak is not detected and treated, it can quickly eliminate and replace all the oxygen in a room. Additionally, when a heating system malfunctions, the carbon monoxide (CO) is released into the living space instead of being properly vented. The leading cause of carbon monoxide (CO) deaths in the United States, are due to improperly ventilated or malfunctioning heating systems.

Natural gas detectors and carbon monoxide (CO) detectors will detect these gases in the home when the human nose cannot, and sound an alarm warning of a natural gas leak. Designed to be an early warning system, the natural gas detector's alarm will sound when gas is detected at or below the 25% range of the Lower Explosive Limit (LEL).

Industrial Gas Detection

Industrial facilities face additional gas detection challenges because the very nature of some industrial processes create the chance for both toxic and combustible gas leaks, posing a severe risk to the industrial plant, its workers , and nearby residential areas.

Toxic gas, such as hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and combustible gas, such as methane can require different kinds of monitoring. A potentially lethal threat can also occur if toxic and combustible gases are combined as the result of multiple gas leaks. In fact, such events are quite common in industrial facilities such as chemical plants, wastewater plants, and specialty manufacturing facilities.

Some facilities employ an industrial hygienist, who is responsible for gas detection and analysis, and for implementing evacuation plans should a gas leak occur. Proper gas detection instruments and monitoring equipment should be researched and chosen according to the type of facility and the gases in use.
